Reparation Thoughts

….By His Wounds we are healed

Volume XXIV, Number 3

Dear Donnès of Reparation, Family and Friends,

The beautiful season of Lent is here! Jesus spent forty days in the desert, thus forty days are set aside for offering penance, making a change of heart, strengthening our moral character and inner core toward holiness. The Church teaches us to consider three facets of penitential offerings: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Let these guide your journey.

Just what does it mean to build Christian character? The Apostle Peter writes: “Make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7) We are called to develop all these traits at the same time, because each one of these traits augments all the others. Strive to possess these qualities in increasing measure. As we are consistently seeking to add more and more of each trait, our whole life will crescendo into a symphony to God. When we add all the qualities that Peter sites, we become God’s song, composed by the Lord Himself and rich with the harmony of a well-blended character. What a destiny! What a goal!

St. Teresa of Avila said: “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing make you afraid, all things are passing. God alone never changes. Patience gains all things. If you have God, you will want for nothing. God alone suffices”. Are there some issues in your life that cause you to be disturbed? What natural thing do you fear? Could your trust in God be firmer?

St. Teresa also said: “God is willing to wait for me for many a day, even many a year.” What has God been waiting for me to do? How am I hesitant to come closer to Him? How could I enhance my relationship with Him especially in my contacts with others?

And the great St. Augustine firmly nails the point: “Christ has no body on earth but yours; no hands on earth but your hands. Yours are the eyes through which He looks out with compassion upon the world; yours the feet with which He chooses to go about doing good. For as He is the Head, so you are the members; and we are all one in Christ Jesus.”

May your Lenten journey be richly blessed!
